Wonderfully “Wicked”

On Saturday Kerissa and I met in Seoul to enjoy a theatrical masterpiece that was…

…Wicked- The Broadway Musical. Not to be a boring writer but the show was outstanding.

What was it about?

So you know about the Wizard of Oz right? The show is about what happened before Dorothy landed in Oz. Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: The pretty, blonde and very popular Glinda (Suzie Mathers) and a misunderstood green girl, Elphaba (Jemma Rix). The story is that Glinda and Elphaba were friends.

Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda, The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Have you ever wondered about the origins of the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz”? Why Dorothy and Toto were sent to Land of Oz through a tornado? All those truths await you in this epic musical.

The presentation?

From the moment I walked into the theater, my eyes caught sight of the huge mechanical Dragon hanging on top of the stage. When the show began, I was brought back to my university days, scrutinizing every detail on the costumes and stage, anticipating the next plot of the storyline. I was deeply impressed when Elphaba sang “Defying Gravity”, and I am sure you would when you see it for yourself. As the show progresses, the stage transforms from one scene to another seamlessly and fluidly right before your eyes.

Take note:

Jemma Rix has an immensely powerful voice, simultaneously capable of lifting the roof and plucking your heartstrings, and when she defies gravity, you know about it. Her Elphaba is passionate, strong and exceptionally frustrated with the world around her.

Also, Suzie Mathers is hilarious as G(a)linda and look out for dashing Australian born David Harris who plays the role of the handsome Fiyero!

Overall, I would give this musical a strong 8/10 stars. It will never match up to The Lion King (just my opinion) but I highly recommend “Wicked the Broadway Musical” to everyone in Korea… take this opportunity and catch this world class performance while it is in Korea for a limited time. Happy Viewing!
